9 Oct 2009 - 9th October 2009

Mrs Hurley and Year 5 presented a great assembly last week on the theme of qualities and talents.  They reminded us of the qualities that God would like us all to have; they also told us that we have to work hard and persevere to develop our talents and skills.  On Monday we held a Rosary assembly for the whole school as October is the month of the Rosary.   Please try and encourage your children to use their Rosary beads during this month—maybe they could say a decade as part of their bedtime prayer routine.  The Open Morning for prospective parents was well attended on Wednesday. Governors and I met with many families who are considering sending their children to the school; it was lovely to greet so many past pupils who now have children of their own. All the visitors were full of praise for our Year 6 children who acted as tour guides.  Fr Jean-Laurent came in on Thursday afternoon for his first official visit to the school. He is keen to work closely with both Catholic schools under his jurisdiction (he is also Parish Priest of Canvey Island). He would also love to see as many families as possible attend Sunday Mass regularly.  Everyone will have a chance to say hello to Fr Jean-Laurent this weekend as he will be celebrating all Masses in Benfleet and Hadleigh.

Family Mass We will hold our first Family Mass of the school year on Sunday at 11.00am at Holy Family Church. This will be our Harvest Mass and the children will be able to bring up their donations of food and produce during the offertory. I hope as many families as possible will be able to attend Family Mass and welcome Fr Jean-Laurent to the parish.

School Uniform Children from Holy Family always look smart—they are a credit to their families and their school. However, from time to time, there are small lapses in our standards of dress. A number of girls in the junior school have recently been wearing long knee length navy socks—I believe they are currently fashionable (watch some of the shows on the Disney Channel for confirmation). The school uniform for all girls is white socks or navy tights. Thank you for your continued support of our uniform policy.

After School Clubs Holy Family children benefit from a wide range of clubs before and after school.  Many of these are run on a voluntary basis by staff who give up their own time freely for the good of the children. To maintain the good will of the staff running clubs, it is important that children are picked up and dropped off at the correct time. It is unfair for staff to have to wait behind with children who are often picked up late. From time to time parents can and do get delayed unexpectedly—in these circumstances we would appreciate a phone call to the school office.

Friends of Holy Family Fancy Dress Discos The Friends met a few weeks ago to organise some events for the coming year. The first event will be a Fancy Dress Disco on Friday 6th November. There will be two discos—one for RD, Y1, Y2 children at 3.30pm—5.00pm and one for Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6 at 5.30pm — 7.00pm. Tickets can be ordered by filling in the slip at the bottom of this newsletter. Tickets cost £2.50 per child with a maximum charge of £5.00 per family. The next Friends meeting will be on Thursday 15th October at 2.15pm. Please do try to attend—new faces are always welcome.

Morning Prayer All are welcome—parents, children and grandparents in the Art Room each day—8.40am—8.55am. Please do try and come along for 10—15 minutes each morning. This month, October, is the month of the Rosary, so please do try and come along and say a decade or two with us—there are always spare beads for those who haven’t brought their own. The Rosary is one of the most traditional forms of Catholic prayer, given to St Dominic by Our Lady over 700 years ago.

Morning Sports Club All children are welcome to attend the SUFC sports clubs on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The clubs begin at 8.00am (7.55 drop off) and are a very reasonable £1.00 per child.

Maths Morning Thanks to all those parents who have returned their Maths morning slips. I know Mrs Hurley is planning an exciting morning for all of you based on calculation strategies; you will also have an opportunity to watch maths in action in your child’s class. Parents will be able to visit Years 1—6.  Miss Duckers will arrange another time later in the year when parents will be able to watch maths being taught in RD. RD parents are of course most welcome to attend the Maths Morning and are free to go and watch Maths being taught in any classroom other than RD.

Midday Relief The school would like to build up a list of people willing to work as relief midday assistants. If you could occasionally spare 1 ¼ hours between 12.00 and 1.15pm, please contact Miss M Harman, Finance and Personnel Officer at the school office.

Fundraising Curry Fest Julia Jacobs is organising a curry night at the Tandoori Parlour on Tuesday 24th November, 7.30pm. The evening is being run to raise much needed funds for Finlay Fairs, a small boy who has cerebral palsy. Finlay’s parents have to buy a special swivel car seat at great expense. Tickets are priced at £12.00 for a buffet meal, disco and karaoke. These evenings are always great fun, so please try and come along. Julia can be contacted on 07968 198002.

Thought for the week “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” William Butler Yeats (Irish poet and dramatist).

Saint of the week, October 13th is the Feast day of Edward the Confessor, King of England. His reign was marked by his just rule and removal of odious taxes; he was also known for his piety. He built St Peter’s Abbey in Westminster where he was buried. This is now the site of the present Westminster Abbey.
